Every year the U.S. government holds a lottery process to offer 55,000 visas for permanent residency to citizens of countries with low immigration to the United States. If you are chosen in the lottery, you can live and work in the U.S. permanently. You can also bring your spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age.

Green Card Lottery Country Requirements:

To participate in the visa lottery, you must be a citizen in a non-excluded country. Those born in any territory that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive a diversity visa.

If you are a citizen of one of the countries listed above, you may still be able to apply if you fall under one of the two exception categories. First, you may still be able to apply for the visa lottery if your spouse was born in a non-excluded country. Alternatively, you may be eligible if your parents only temporarily lived in the excluded country you were born in, and they themselves were born in a non-excluded country.

Education or Work Requirement

To enter the visa lottery, you must also meet the minimum education or work requirement.

The education and work requirements include:

 

  • At least a U.S. high school diploma or an equivalent level of education
  • At least two years of work experience in a qualified profession (requires a minimum of two years of training) within the last five years
If you do not meet either of these criteria, you will not be able to apply for the green card lottery.
